Hexagram 36 · 地火明夷
Darkening of the Light
Earth · Kan palace
Light forced to hide; protect it and endure.
Meaning
Light fallen beneath the earth. Darkening of the Light describes a period when integrity and clarity must be concealed rather than displayed.
Decision Framework
Conceal your light; survive the dark season.
Decision Guidance
Darkening of the Light is an unfavourable reading, and one of the more demanding. It describes a time of diminished recognition or active distortion, when what is true and capable is not welcome, and speaking plainly would do harm.
The classical instruction—associated with the story of a talented advisor surviving a corrupt court—is to shield your abilities and keep them intact rather than to fight the darkness. Continue to work, keep your standards, but do not advertise. This phase is about endurance and preserving your capacity for the moment light returns.
