Hexagram 15 · 地山谦
Modesty
Earth · Dui palace
Deliberate understatement; quiet merit carried far.
Meaning
A mountain hidden within the earth: greatness that does not advertise itself. Modesty is consistently one of the most favourable hexagrams in the sequence.
Decision Framework
Understate, and let substance speak.
Decision Guidance
Modesty recommends a specific posture: represent yourself smaller than your actual capacity, and let results argue on your behalf. It is not diffidence—it is a strategic reduction of resistance.
The reasoning in the classical texts is practical rather than moral. People and systems tend to correct for excessive claims, and a modest presentation avoids that correction while leaving your contribution visible where it counts. In negotiations this shows up as asking for less and keeping more; in leadership, as giving credit away and retaining authority.
