Hexagram 54 · 雷泽归妹

The Marrying Maiden

Wood · Dui palace

A secondary role; enthusiasm outpacing the position.

Meaning

Thunder above the lake: movement following feeling. The Marrying Maiden concerns entering a situation in a subordinate position, often with more eagerness than standing.

Decision Framework

Do not overreach; accept the position you actually hold.

Decision Guidance

The Marrying Maiden is an unfavourable reading, and its warning is about position rather than people. It describes a situation where someone enters on enthusiastic terms into a role that is structurally secondary and then finds the constraints hard.

The classical counsel is to keep your expectations aligned with your actual standing. It does not forbid the arrangement, but it identifies the failure mode clearly: acting as though you hold authority you do not hold, or assuming the initial warmth will survive unchanged. Accept the role for what it is, or decline it, but do not proceed on a misread of your own position.
