Hexagram 39 · 水山蹇

Obstruction

Water · Dui palace

Hard going; turn back or find another way.

Meaning

Water on the mountain: danger and difficulty stacked together. Obstruction describes a path that is genuinely blocked.

Decision Framework

Do not force the blocked path; seek another or turn back.

Decision Guidance

Obstruction is an unfavourable reading about impediment. It appears when the direct route is genuinely unavailable—not merely slow, but consistently defended by difficulty.

The characteristic instruction is unusual among these readings: turn back, or find another way, rather than persevering. The classical text praises the person who recognises the obstruction early and seeks help or an alternative, and criticises the one who exhausts themselves against a wall. Doing the difficult thing is a virtue; doing the impossible thing is not.

Judgment — Classical Text

利西南,不利东北。利见大人,贞吉。

EN The southwest furthers, the northeast does not. Meeting the great person furthers; perseverance brings good fortune.
