Hexagram 51 · 震为雷

The Arousing Thunder

Wood · Zhen palace

Shock and awakening; the disturbance that clarifies.

Meaning

Thunder doubled: sudden, repeated shock. The Arousing concerns events that shake a situation into attention.

Decision Framework

Stay composed through the shock; it will pass.

Decision Guidance

The Arousing describes disruption: the sudden event that startles and reorganises a situation. It might be an external shock, a piece of news, or a disruption you yourself set off.

Its classical virtue is composure. Thunder stops as quickly as it starts, and the hexagram praises the person who can hold their footing while others scatter—carrying the shock as a summons to attention rather than to panic. A disturbance can serve as a useful refresh, but only if you keep your presence of mind long enough to hear what it is telling you.

Judgment — Classical Text
